Phim kể về câu chuyện của Sylvie (Fanny Ardant), một người phụ nữ xinh đẹp và quyến rũ, người bất ngờ trở thành một nhân vật trung tâm trong một vụ án giết người bí ẩn. Sau cái chết của chồng cô, Sylvie tìm thấy mình bị cuốn vào một vụ điều tra liên quan đến một bức thư bí mật mà cô tình cờ phát hiện ra.
Một phần lớn của câu chuyện xoay quanh Julien Vercel (Jean-Louis Trintignant), một thám tử kỳ cựu, người được thuê để điều tra về cái chết của người chồng Sylvie. Vercel là một người đàn ông sắc sảo nhưng cũng khá ngờ nghệch trong các mối quan hệ cá nhân, đặc biệt là khi anh dần dần bị lôi cuốn vào sự quyến rũ của Sylvie.
Khi thám tử Julien điều tra, anh phát hiện ra rằng cái chết của người chồng Sylvie không đơn giản như vẻ bề ngoài, và có thể có một âm mưu đen tối liên quan đến một bí mật lớn mà Sylvie che giấu.
