"Escape from New York" (1981), directed by John Carpenter, is a dystopian action film set in a future where Manhattan has been transformed into a maximum-security prison. The U.S. government has isolated the island, turning it into a walled-off area where society’s most dangerous criminals are sent.

The story follows former special forces soldier Snake Plissken, played by Kurt Russell, who is reluctantly tasked with rescuing the President of the United States after Air Force One crashes in New York. The President is taken hostage by a gang led by the ruthless Duke of New York, who rules the prison city.

To ensure Snake's compliance, the government injects him with explosive devices that will detonate if he fails to complete the mission within 24 hours. As Snake navigates the treacherous landscape of New York, he encounters various characters, including a friendly cabbie and other inmates, while trying to evade capture and save the President.

The film is notable for its gritty atmosphere, memorable one-liners, and its commentary on crime and societal decay. It has since become a cult classic, praised for its action sequences and unique vision of a post-apocalyptic world.
